Dennis Evans sadly passed away on December 21 aged 87.

Mr Evans, who was Head of Music at Westcliff High School for Boys in the 1970s and

1980s, saw the subject flourished under his direction.

Activities he initiated included trips to International Musical Eisteddfod at Llangollen, where the school choir competed successfully, alongside the annual drama production and termly

music concerts.

He was also well known and respected outside of school, teaching at various music schools and colleges, and contributing to the music scene throughout Southend.

Many of his pupils went on to become professional musicians, whilst others have continued to enjoy and play music in various amateur groups.

In recent Mr Evans was still making music, and recorded some pieces on the piano for the 75th anniversary of VE day for HMS Leigh.

He also played regularly for the Sunday services at the Salvation Army in Southend.

In Alan White’s ‘A Centenary History’ Westcliff High School for Boys it is recorded ‘that his versatility knew no bounds’.

The funeral will take place on Thursday February 1, at Southend Crematorium, Sutton Road, at 12 noon followed by a thanksgiving service at Southend Salvation Army, Clarence Street, SS1 1BD at 1.30pm.

All are welcome.
