Tributes To Former Mayor

A FORMER Southend Mayor, famed for his kindness, has sadly passed away.

Ron Price, who grew up in Southend, died this June aged 85, after a lifetime of community service.

Born on September 5, 1938, Ron started his education at Bournemouth Park Road School, where he became head boy in 1949.

The following year, he attended Southend High School for Boys, where he excelled in sports, particularly football, cricket, and cross-country running.

His love of cricket would continue throughout his life, alongside his total commitment to the life of Southend, which extended across official council roles and across a wide amount of charity work and involvement with the Rotary Clubs of Southend and Leigh.

Ron was made Mayor of Southend in 2006/7, a role he described as a “privilege.”

Awarded the Southend Citizen of the Year and the Paul Harris Fellowship – honouring people who have made significant contributions to the Rotary Foundation – he was also awarded the Honorary Alderman by Southend Council – the highest award that can be made to a former councillor in recognition of exceptional service.

Alongside Janice, his wife of 32 years, Ron also raised an impressive £106,000 for the Southend Hospital cardiac unit.

Paying tribute to her husband, Janice called him “the kindest and most supportive men I have ever met.

“He had a keen sense of what is right and would never hesitate to support that view.”

A family spokesman added: “To the day he died, he loved his life with his wife, Janice and children Kevin, Matthew and Kate, stepdaughter Vanessa, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandson.”
