A SOUTH Essex MP has slammed plans to build 1,300 houses in his constituency as a “Trojan Horse” for even larger development, later on.

Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, has replied to a consultation exercise by developer Bloor Homes, to initially build some 1,300 houses at Dollyman’s Farm, Rawreth, in the heart of the Metropolitan Green Belt, between the towns of Rayleigh and Wickford.

The detailed plans, which Mr Francois viewed at a recent public exhibition, show locations for 1,300 houses, but also large swathes of unallocated land within the Dollyman’s boundary, which could potentially accommodate thousands of extra dwellings on the same site, if the original development is approved.

Commenting on his strong opposition to the proposals, Mr Francois said: “These plans are environmentally unsustainable as it is.

“We simply don’t have the local transport, medical or educational infrastructure to cope with housebuilding on this scale. However, the Dollyman’s site, which comes right up to the boundary with Shotgate and is within about half a mile of The Wick, could cram in thousands more, so this initial application is clearly a ‘Trojan Horse’ – to win initial approval and then no doubt open the gates to thousands more dwellings, later on.

“I was re-elected last year with a clear mandate to fight such ‘urban sprawl’ development at Dollyman’s Farm and that is exactly what I am going to do. I hope I will have my constituents’ strong support in this vital fight, to save our precious Green Belt.”
