A HOMEOWENER from Rochford has issued a warning about closing doors, after fleeing in terror from a fire in one of their bedrooms.

Tracey Blackman and her husband saw thick black smoke moments after hearing a “loud bang” in their home, in Ashcombe Road. The couple shut the door, and left the building, calling 999.

Firefighters told Tracey her quick-thinking to close the bedroom door before exiting the property was instrumental in saving her house from destruction, although the bedroom was destroyed, and the house suffered smoke and water damage.

It has been reported that the blaze started after the explosion of a fan light.

Mrs Blackman, who owns TJ’s Beauty Lounge in Westcliff, said: “It happened so quickly.

“The fire service said if all the doors were open upstairs, the fire would have damaged the whole of the upstairs.

“It is horrible, but we want to raise awareness around the simple steps of closing the doors as it saved our house.

“Our fire, apart from smoke damage, was contained to one room because of this, otherwise we would have lost our whole house.

“It is quite an eye opener, and it is probably the best spent money to go on that course from a fire safety point of view.”

An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.

Mrs Blackman added her thanks to the fire service: “I want to say a massive thank you to the fire crews who attended, we are so grateful they saved our house.”

Taking to social media to share advice and a video of the damage, Mrs Blackman added: “please please ensure all your doors are closed. It can help contain a fire to one room. A fire can take hold in a room in less than five minutes.

“Do you and your family know your escape route to get out, in case of a fire?”
