The government is inviting people to have their say on creating a water sector fit for the future.

David Burton-Sampson, who has been holding water summits over the scourge of sewage in the estuary, is encouraging people to get involved.

The MP for Southend West and Leigh said: “Earlier this week Labour’s groundbreaking Water Act become law – with new powers to ban the payment of unfair bonuses for polluting water bosses and bring criminal charges against lawbreakers.

“It’s the most significant increase in enforcement powers in a decade, but we know there’s a long way to go. Now the government is welcoming peoples’ responses on what they think about cleaning up our waterways and rebuilding our broken water infrastructure.

“It’s a great opportunity for people here to voice their opinion.”

The Independent Water Commission is looking at six key areas and its consultation can be found on https://consult.defra.gov.uk/independent-water-commission/independent-commission-on-the-water-sector-regulat/.

All responses to the Call for Evidence must be received by midnight on Wednesday 23 April.
