A CHARITY which supports vulnerable people in the local area is assisting its members to tend a Westcliff allotment.

St Vincent de Paul Society users set to work in the Springfield Drive allotment, nurturing soil beds and harvesting fresh produce.

Mark, a programme lead for St Vincent’s, said the weekly allotment session helps the group develop “a sense of belonging,” whilst nurturing essential skills and community as part of the charity’s Pioneer Programme.

“It’s not just about growing vegetables, it’s about growing confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging,” he said.

In a recent social media post, St Vincent’ shared photographs of the weekly meet up, busy at work in the lush green space of the allotment.

They commented: “Today we’re out with our amazing allotment group, soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the fresh air! A perfect boost for mental health and wellbeing.”

Daniel Cauchi, who is centre manager for At Vincent’s in Southend, added: “it’s more than just gardening, it’s a powerful pathway to well-being, recovering and community.”

The allotment, lovingly tended by participants of the Pioneer Program, provides a safe therapeutic space where individuals can work together, enjoy nature and find purpose.

The team at St. Vincent’s is already planning for the summer season, with hopes of expanding the project and welcoming more members into the growing community.
