Who Were They? - Letter from Leigh Town Councillor Paul Gilson
LETTER from Leigh Town Councillor Paul Gilson – Having recently returned from the 85th anniversary of the evacuation of Dunkirk with the little ships, it made me realise that it was not just boats from Leigh and Southend that volunteered. Ordinary men, residents’ joined boats at the end of the pier but who were they?
I am well aware of my father-in-law Harold Joscelyne and his two brothers, Sonny and Vincent, went, joining boats at the end of the Pier.
They answered the call with out hesitation, they did not go on the local cockle boats. They went on a tug and a barge, on my conversations with Harold there were others that joined that day at the end of the pier.
Who were they? Where did they come from?
If any one has a relative or friend who was one of those volunteers can you please get in touch. Email: [email protected].
Their name and boat would be best, we have a register of vessels that took part, but we are short on who went on them and where.
