Leigh On Sea News: Windmill’s 20th Anniversary – VOLUNTEERS at Rayleigh’s historic Windmill are hosting a festival on Sunday 26th July 2026, to celebrate 20 years of the Windmill reopening following major refurbishment in 2006.
There will be live music, face painting and a variety of exhibitions and stalls, also free guided tours of the iconic Windmill.
Next door the Mill Hall cafe will be open serving refreshments and there will be free parking at Mill Hall and the other car parks around Rayleigh town centre.
Trevor Rand, Volunteer Coordinator at the Windmill said: “You can see our magnificent Windmill from many parts of the town and beyond.
“But some people still don’t know how to get there. The best way to find it is along the High Street and take the small side road, Bellingham Lane, by the town clock. On the left of Bellingham Lane is the Windmill, Mill Arts & Events Centre and the entrance to The Mount (the site of Rayleigh’s Norman Castle).
“We are very happy that our 20th anniversary celebration comes at the start of the school holidays, because we hope to attract a lot of families who will appreciate free tours of our iconic Windmill.
“The event opens at 1pm and runs through to 4pm on Sunday 26th July. We are very grateful to Rochford District Council for arranging the event and for their care of the Windmill over the years.”
The festivities will extend to Rayleigh Town Museum at 91 High Street (above Pizza Express). This is fitting because the museum itself evolved from the Windmill volunteers and will be holding an exhibition of Windmill restoration photos in addition to their extensive permanent display of historic objects that has won great praise from many quarters.
