A NUMBER of British WW2 Anti Aircraft bombs were found by a bait digger in the creek just below the road bridge leading into Old Leigh, on Friday May 9.

Army bomb disposal experts quickly arrived on the scene and, having moved them to a safe distance away from the shore, detonated them in a controlled explosion.

Infantry veteran Frank Pettigrew happened to be in old Leigh at the time and knowing some of the bomb disposal team, having worked along side them in various exercises as a soldier, was able to chat to some of them as they were making the bombs safe.

He said: “Just by coincidence I happened to bump into some serving friends.”

Adding: “I was just assisting some of the guy’s because I knew them. They were just a bit short handed.

He confirmed that the bombs were: “British anti aircraft bombs.”

Asked how many bombs there were, Mr Pettigrew added: “I don’t know the exact figures, I didn’t get that close. I was told there were a few that needed disposing of.”
