THE Palace Theatre’s Summer Youth Project (SYP) returns this August, with a performance of ‘School of Rock.’
SYP is for young people aged between 9 and 19 with a passion for performing, or a keen eye for backstage, who take over the Palace Theatre for two weeks over the summer holidays, to create six performances of a well-known and loved musical to live audiences.
This year’s choice is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s award-winning smash hit musical, which premiered on Broadway in 2015 and has since been seen on stages around the globe.
SYP will be presenting the musical from August 3 to 6, in a story that follows an enthusiastic guitarist (Dewey Finn) who gets kicked out of his own band, where he finds himself in need of a job.
Finn decides to pose as his best friend and housemate, Ned Schneebly, a substitute schoolteacher at an elite private elementary school.
After Finn overhears his new class of students in their music class with their uptight principal, Rosaline Mullins, he sees an opportunity to expose the students to his world of rock, and transform them into his very own band, The School of Rock.
As Dewey does all he can to make the students tap in to their inner rockstar, they soon become a guitar-shredding, bass-slipping, mind blowing rock band and find themselves seeking redemption with their new teacher at the Battle of the Bands competition.
The School of Rock band will be playing Live on stage by the production’s young actors and musicians every night.
